What to expect from Capture One for iPad

Soon you can take your workflow on the go. On June 28, Capture One for iPad will be available in the App Store in all countries.

Creating the iPad app has meant making choices about how to best serve our community of photographers and meet their needs in a timely manner. In this article, we will answer some of your most asked questions about the app and share some of the decisions behind the creation of Capture One for iPad.

What can you expect from Capture One for iPad?

The Capture One for iPad app has been created to complement the Capture One Pro desktop app. Even though the iPad app works perfectly well on its own, the two products work even better together. The new Cloud Transfer system lets you start on the go using the iPad and make the final touches at home on the desktop by transferring your work smoothly across devices – helping you get the most out of your time, money, and images.

Throughout the development of the app, we have spoken to professional photographers about their needs and wishes. We have also looked at the usage data to find the must-have tools for mobility.

With the Capture One for iPad app, you can plug your camera directly into your iPad, import hundreds of photos, organize them and get to culling. See your images in all their glory on the iPad screen, quickly swipe through, and rate or color tag them. Filter your best ones and start editing using either Styles or manual adjustments.

Once you are done editing, you can show your images on the screen to team members and clients when together on location or by exporting them as JPEGs. If you would like to refine your images even further when you get home, upload your album to the cloud, import it into Capture One Pro on desktop, and continue working from where you left off.

Unique app design for a better user experience

If you are used to working on Capture One on your desktop, you will notice that Capture One for iPad looks different from the interface that you know. To make sure that the app meets the needs of photographers on the go and is easy to navigate for both new and veteran users, we have created a whole new design for the best user experience.

Our team of user researchers, UX designers, and UI designers have studied when, where, and how you would use the iPad app and made an interface to fit. The result of this research is features like our two-handed UI, hand gestures used to control the tools, such as long pressing on the screen to see the before and after of your photo, or the amount of space dedicated to your images on the screen.

Which features will be available in Capture One for iPad?

To not delay the release of Capture One for iPad, we have chosen to launch it with a reduced set of features. The first version is not the final version, but it is a version that we think will bring a lot of value to our community of photographers. We are happy about the features it will offer you, plus the quality, reliability, and performance of the app. It is a great starting point for the future, and we have tons of things in the pipeline for you.

In the initial release, you will find key features like Star Rating, Color Tagging, Styles and Presets, Crop and Rotation, and editing tools you know and love for adjusting White Balance, Exposure, Dynamic Range, Clarity, and much more. In addition, you will have several options for exporting images or transferring them to your desktop app.

How much does Capture One for iPad cost?

From July 28, you can finally get your hands on Capture One for iPad to take your workflow on the go even easier. When you purchase the app you’ll get access to powerful editing tools, exporting capabilities, and image transfer from iPad to Capture One Pro on desktop (you’ll need to be on the latest version of Capture One Pro to use that last one).

Capture One for iPad will be available as a monthly subscription at just $4.99 / €5.49 / £4.49 per month with unlimited file transfer between your iPad and your desktop app.

When will tethering be available in the Capture One for iPad app?

Tethering has proved to be a challenging feature to develop for the iPad. To not slow down the release of an app that we believe will bring a lot of value to many photographers right now, we have decided to leave it out of the initial release.

Tethering is one of Capture One’s key features, and as such, we could not forget about it. We have worked closely with Apple over the past few months, and we can safely say that tethering for iPad is coming.

Follow us on Instagram to be the first to find out when tethering for Capture One for iPad will be available.

Seven Reasons to use Capture One Live

8 reasons to use Capture One Live on your next shoot

Tired of constant back and forth with clients and unnecessary delays taking up your precious time?

With Capture One Live – a real-time image-sharing tool that integrates seamlessly with Capture One Pro – you can instantly share your work with others and speed up your workflow leaving more time to do the things you love. Here are eight reasons to use Capture One Live to create a more efficient and collaborative workflow for your next photoshoot.

1. Have clients and colleagues join photoshoots anywhere in the world

Your clients/collaborators can join a photoshoot and view images as you shoot them from anywhere in the world. No need to fly across cities, countries, or continents for you or your clients, saving time and money. The freedom of location Capture One Live offers can also help you widen your client base outside of your local area.

2. View images in real-time on separate devices

Even if you are in the same location, Capture One Live can be useful. Your clients/collaborators who are on set can view images as you take them on any device with access to a browser. Not only does this leave your workstation free for you and only you, but it can help others feel more integrated with the process.

Whoever you choose to share the live link with can view, cull, proof, and select images in a web browser on a device of their choice.

3. Get instant feedback without exporting

Your clients/collaborators can provide feedback by rating, tagging and leaving comments* on your images using the Capture One Live sharing link you provide while you shoot. As they review the images, you can follow their feedback in real-time in your Capture One Pro collection or in the ‘Live’ link.

That means no more uploading, downloading, or transferring the images and emailing back and forth to get their feedback. Everything stays in one place so that you have a clear overview of what happens at all times.

*Comments for Capture One Live are currently in the beta phase and only viewable through the browser.

4. Get feedback on your edits

Capture One Live is not only for sharing during your shoot. Your clients/collaborators can also follow along as you edit your photos. Through their browser, they are able to watch the process at any step to get the best result, whether it is to approve a final edit or give input on different Styles or looks.

5. Leave your mark and keep your images safe from screenshotters

Concerned about people screenshotting your images in Capture One Live and using them without your consent? Don’t worry. You can add a watermark to your images in the Capture One Live menu making sure no one uses your images without your permission.

By adding a watermark to your images, you can also keep your brand at top of people’s minds when you are sharing a Live Session.

With Capture One Live, your clients can view and rate your images in any web-browser

6. No need for screen-sharing

Capture One Live cuts out the need for messy screen-sharing over Teams or Zoom. Clients and collaborators can view the images in any browser and have full control over which image to view and how much time to spend on each image – a much better user experience for everyone involved.

Soon you will also be able to add comments in addition to tags and ratings, meaning all feedback from your clients and collaborators can be found within Capture One Live.

7. Keep your sessions live for as long as you need

When setting up your Live Session, you can choose how long you want to share the images – a day, a week, or longer. It’s up to you.

For those who want to do things at their own pace, the link that you share can stay live for up to a month – giving your clients/collaborators time to approve images and give you feedback. You can be away from your computer and close down Capture One Pro while this happens. Simply click “Resume sharing” when you return to your computer, and the ratings, and tags will sync to your Capture One Pro desktop app or check the Capture One Live link to see or respond to comments.

8. Pick and choose which images to share

If you don’t want to give your clients/collaborators complete access, you can choose which images you want to share. You can create a separate Album just for them and use keyboard shortcuts to move images back and forth (see more about that here).

The benefits speak for themselves – Capture One Live is the perfect way for you and your clients to make the most of a photoshoot, letting you save both time and money on reshoots.

All you need to know about the latest update to Capture One Pro

Take your collaboration to the next level, get more freedom of movement on your shoots, and make your editing sessions quicker and easier than ever by updating your Capture One Pro desktop app from the 14th of June.

Here are seven improvements to get excited about in the latest update.

1. Make your Live Sessions longer

Give your clients and collaborators more time to review and give feedback on your images. With the latest update of Capture One Pro, Live sessions can last for up to one month, letting your clients view and rate the images in their own time and giving you more time to review their feedback.

2. Keep your shared images safe

Concerned about people screenshotting your images in Capture One Live and using them without your consent? Don’t worry. With the latest update, you can now find the option to add a watermark to your images in the Capture One Live menu making it easier to keep your images safe.

3. Commenting for Capture One Live is here

We hear you. Tags and ratings are fine and dandy, but when will you be able to add comments to images in a Capture One Live Session? The answer is now.

With the latest update, we are launching the beta test for comments. The clients or collaborators that you choose to share the Capture One Live link with can now add written feedback to the images as they come in or for as long as you keep the Session “live”.

For now, comments will only be viewable on the browser. But we are continuously working on improving the tool and in the not-so-distant future, comments will also sync to your Capture One Pro desktop app.

4. Get ready for Capture One for iPad

We know many of you are looking forward to working on the go with the Capture One iPad app later this month. To take full advantage of the flexibility that the iPad app offers and to use the cloud transfer to move your images from your iPad to your desktop, you need to be on the latest version of Capture One Pro.

Update from the 14th of June and be ready to explore the possibilities of Capture One for iPad from day one.

5. Unleashed – Wireless Tethering for Sony users

Since the launch of Capture One Pro 22 in December, Canon users have been able to get off the leash and get fast and reliable wireless tethering on their shoots. Sony camera owners can now enjoy the same freedom after installing the latest update to Capture One Pro.

Get those hard-to-reach angles, remove tripping hazards and clutter around your workspace, and get more freedom to move around the set without worrying about pulling all your equipment with you.

6. Introducing the Magic Eraser

Your wish is our command. The Magic Eraser is here to complete the magic brushing experience for anyone who works with Layers. As a counter tool to the Magic Brush, the Magic Eraser removes parts of a mask based on similarities in the image.

Update your software to make your masking workflow faster and cleaner than ever.

7. The tool panel is getting a new look

We are always working to make your editing experience as efficient and fast as possible. That is why the Tool Panel is getting a redesign.

The tool panel is getting a new look with larger icons and titles. It will also be easier to customize the layout to make it fit your workflow

With the latest update to Capture One Pro coming, you’ll find a refreshed Tool Panel design featuring new icons, offering a more intuitive, predictable design of the tool tabs. It also makes the experience of switching between iPad and desktop seamless so you can work even easier within the Capture One ecosystem going forward.

Additionally, a dedicated button has been added to make customization of the Tool Panel more discoverable. You can rearrange the panel as you please, so why not play with the placement of the tools you use the most to make it fit your workflow?
