Black & White, Image Editing

Capture One with Phil Penman

UK-born, NY-based photographer Phil Penman has documented the rapid flux of New York City’s streets for over 25 years. With clients ranging from People Magazine to The Daily Telegraph, he has photographed celebrated living legends, including Jennifer Lopez and Bill Gates, and captured historical moments such as the September 11th Terrorist Attacks.

Phil will take us through his editing and thought process on a selection of his photos, how he approaches black and white editing and his preferred techniques.

There was also been time at the end of the webinar for a general Q&A and a discussion on how best to approach street subjects.

David Grover

Hi Pragati,

There should be a sign up box above this comment section. Can you see it now?

Lothar Troeller

You need to turn off the add blocker first…

And also, if you look at this website on a Mac, with Safari, and with “Dark Mode” turned, on, then the signup box appears in Black-on-Black and seems invisible. Not good. 馃檪

Hi Florian,

Thanks for the feedback. The sign up box is something I am testing, so good to know for the future.

David Grover

Hi Chris,

Do you not see the large white sign up box on this page?

Don Carrick

Looking forward to this webinar. Thanks to C1 for these tutorials and a great product.

Can’t see a sign up spot.

Hi,

would love to see this session, admire the idea, however will not be available at this time. Will you later upload it, so I (and others) can watch on youtube?

Thanx, Markus

David Grover

Hi Marcus,

Yes, absolutely!

Gary Smith

Why do I have to agree to emails from 3rd parties to attend the webinar? I guess this also proves no one reads the Ts & Cs because both the Terms and the Privacy Policy links at the bottom return 404 errors.

David Grover

Hi Gary,

The webinar provider that we use needs to send you a couple of emails. i.e Registration confirmation and a reminder, to cite two examples. They come from Bigmarker, not directly from Capture One. therefore, legally that’s why the notice is there. With regards to the Terms and Privacy links broken, that seems to be an issue with the registration plug in.

If you click this link, https://www.bigmarker.com/Capture_One/Capture-One-with-Phil-Penman , You can view the registration page seperately and the Terms and Privacy links.

B&W is a great photo language, nice chance, maestro!

Johann du Plessis

I would love to attend this but the time does not suit me. Can you provide a link with the presentation please and when will I be able to watch it then? How long will it be available online?

David Grover

Hi Johann,

The recording of the broadcast will be on this page. There is no time limit.

Lee Carruthers

If you鈥檙e not available to watch live can this be viewed after event?

David Grover

Hi Lee,

Great and informative session – created momentary Leica-lust until I heard the price.

I’m probably in the minority but it would be helpful when using Mac-specific functionality if it was so noted. I searched all over to find how to auto-hide the toolbar only to discover not available for Windows; likewise for how to write scripts/actions although I suspect adding a tool to create and parse scripts for WIN is not cost-effective.

And a tangential question: is there an optimal baseline point for using film presets? I’m seeing mono film presets render in color (color curve, Provia for example, or Auto, etc.). Linear response “seems” to most stable.

Thanks ,

Bob

David Grover

Hi Bob,

Normally I would, but on this occasion I couldn’t recall if the functionality matched on Windows. Apologies for the confusion.

Linear response will give you a much flatter start point, but might require you to do a bit more work to get your final result.
